Tea
Photos 2010
On
a beautiful Sunday afternoon (September 19, 2010), members and
friends of the Greater Boston Section of the National Council of
Negro Women gathered for a membership tea at the historic
Franklin House in Boston, MA. President Carolyn E. Lassiter
envisioned that the tea would capture a moment in time when just
like our mothers and grandmothers, women gathered around their
clotheslines to talk, laugh and discuss what was going on in the
lives of their families, neighborhoods and community.
Setting the stage for the tea, member, Charlene Green set up a
clothesline: complete with wooden clothes pins and a basket full
of clothes to be hung on the line.
The
clothesline was the backdrop for speakers: Alma Wright and Mary
Smoyer to speak about the Boston Women’s Heritage Trail.
Member, Grace Hammonds in her best southern accent delivered the
mighty words from NCNW founder Mary McLeod Bethune’s “Last Will
and Testament “. Entertainment was provided by the Whittakers:
mother, Bithyah played the cello and her eight-year old
daughter, Eleasah played the piano. Member Denise Willis-Turner
presented Eleasah with a children’s book about First Lady
Michelle Obama.
Tea
was served from members best china teapots. The tea sandwiches
and desserts were displayed with elegance and were very good.
Louise Myers, vice president of programs and Tea organizer
reported that “All in all it was a very nice afternoon and
everyone seemed to really enjoy themselves”. She was quite
pleased with the turnout, and she was delighted that new members
joined the NCNW-GBS section.
