Healthy Food Workshop

The Haley House is a visionary non-profit with a purpose to address, through creative alternatives, the needs of the underserved, disenfranchised and at risk men, women, children, and families in the Greater Boston area.  NCNW-GBS financially sponsored and 5 members (Joyce, Susie, Mimi, Linda and CEL) helped 13 pre-teen/teen girls and boys at a "hands on" nutrition, sanitation and cooking workshop.  Didi Emmons, chef/instructor taught and demonstrated how to prepare healthy low fat and delicious meals prepared with fresh fruits, vegetables and whole wheat ingredients.  The young people made a delicious whole wheat crust pizza covered with all fresh vegetables ( tomatoes, summer squash, sweet potato, garlic, onion and cheese) and banana smoothies.  Didi talked about the health risks of poor eating habits, obesity, diabetes, strokes and how  too much fat, beef, etc. clogs our arteries, and how fiber in  veggies and whole wheat products cleans them out! It was a great day, and in keeping with our initiative to increase the awareness and educate young people on the risks of heart disease, stroke, diabetes and obesity.  The women were mothers and grandmothers, the men were workers at the Haley House.
